Kijiji announces "Daily Deals" program

Kijiji honcho @craigmillr promised that today we'd see "something new. It's going to be a big deal :)". I don't see a big announcement yet, but there's something new at Kijiji.ca: "Daily Deals".

WTF? Kijiji is for person-to-person cash sales of used merchandise. An online garage sale. An alternative to newspaper classifieds. I don't understand how this fits with that model. I love coupons, but it's about as synergistic as Canadian Tire offering fresh fruit.

Explanation please? Kijiji's help page explains it like this:

What are Kijiji Daily Deals?

Each day we will offer you a new amazing deal (up to 75% retail price) that is specific to your city.

How are the Kijiji Daily Deals different from standard shopping deals?

The key difference is that there are a minimum number of people required to buy the deal. Basically, we are able to get these great savings off the retail price by getting a lot of buyers.

What‘s an example of a Kijiji Daily Deal?

Example Kijiji Daily Deal: $100 worth of home cleaning service for $50 in your city (minimum 50 buyers)

How does it work?

1. We find great local deals for you.
2. You purchase the deal on Kijiji
3. Once the minimum number buyers have purchased the deal the deal is officially ON.
4. We send you a coupon.
5. You use the coupon and save BIG.

---
PS. I joined the hundred(s) of other Kijiji fans and signed up. I love coupons.

Maybe they're trying to compete with Groupon?

not sure but I use Kijiji because I often find amazing deals. Just bought some roller blinds which saved me $1000 off the retail price (definite brownie points with the lady) :) so, a daily 'deal' offer would make sense to me and not too much of a stretch. I'm excited to see what they'll offer.

I agree with the post. What the heck are the doing in the coupon/deals market anyway? They're unrelated.

Kijiji, leave it to the experts in that field and quit trying to copy other business ideas since you can't seem to expand on your own classifieds business.

How can you consider the two unrelated? What are you looking for when you come to the Classifieds? a deal. why is it a stretch to offer another deal?
