Guelph victims fall for internet-based scam floated on sites such as Kijiji and Craigslist
GUELPH — Three Toronto residents face fraud charges after a Guelph police investigation into an internet-based scam.
The police’s fraud unit began the investigation last May after three people reported the same scam. It involved offering significantly lower priced cable/internet/phone services and the ads were found through classified websites such as Kijiji and Craigslist, police said.
Several different business names such as Horizon Communications, Secure Cable and SkyChoice were used to offer the discounted services, police said. Once the victims expressed interest, they were asked to deposit money into a specific bank account, a PayPal account or to wire transfer the funds.
The people didn’t receive the services, police said. Investigation revealed 75 Canadians fell victim to this scam and lost about $70,000.
The three Toronto residents charged with fraud over $5,000 are to be in court later this month.
